Authority & Accreditation
Statutory Authority
California Education Code Sections 35400 and 35401 grant the OIG statutory authority to perform some of its most critical functions including conducting audits and investigations and referring matters to the local district attorney or the Attorney General for further action.
LAUSD Charter
The Charter for the Office of the Inspector General outlines, among other things, its purpose, responsibilities, authority and relationship to the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Professional Standards
The Office of the Inspector General operates in accordance with the Principles and Standards for Offices of Inspectors General. The Association of Inspectors General drafted these principles and standards based on the quality standards for Federal Inspectors General issued by the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency. The principles and standards represent generally accepted principles, quality standards, and best practices applicable to federal, state, and local offices of Inspectors General.
Peer Review
The Association of Inspectors General recommends that OIGs periodically invite external reviewers to review the OIG's adherence to professional standards. In 2022, the Association of Inspectors General conducted a peer review of the LAUSD-OIG. Their opinion letter is available below:
